Your local Parish Nurse
Ruth McDonald is an experienced RGN, working part time as a clinical leader at Furness General Hospital, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
There are over 60 Parish Nurses working across the UK., Ruth is currently the only Parish Nurse working in Cumbria.
Presently Ruth as the Parish Nurse has a focus on the central ward of Barrow-in-Furness however, if required her services as Parish Nurse are town wide.
What Is a Parish Nurse?
The Parish Nurse is an experienced Registered Nurse, whose knowledge is supported by a specialist nursing education program.
A Parish Nurse works alongside the local church and other healthcare providers.
Spiritual Health is central to wellbeing & influences a person’s entire being. In partnership with other sources the Parish Nurse works to bring ‘wholeness, giving individuals a sense of worth and purpose.
How can the Parish Nurse Help and Who is it For?
The Parish Nurse Can;
• Provide information on healthcare topics, both as one to one and in group settings.
• Help you to understand your disease or condition.
• Identify needs and methods for self help support groups & develop / co-ordinate them.
• Take your blood pressure, check weight, offer support and dietary advice.
• Refer onto your GP and other health professionals as appropriate.
• Offer prayer and discussion to link faith and health as part of the ministry team, only if requested.
• Offer support and a listening ear.
